The Coriolis force is one of the inertia forces that exist in the non-inertial coordinate system due to rotation and the laws of inertia, which manifests itself when moving in the direction at an angle to the axis of rotation. In other words, it is a force that must be applied to a massive body located on the surface of a rotating disk so that it moves from the center of the disk and is on the same radius.

The Most Simple Example

The most common example of using the Coriolis force is the effect of speeding up the torsion of dancers. To speed up his rotation, a person can begin to turn with arms widely spread apart, and then – already in the process – sharply press his hands to the body, which will cause an increase in radial velocity (according to the law of conservation of angular momentum). The effect of the Coriolis force will manifest itself in the fact that for such a movement with your hands you will have to apply efforts not only towards the body but also in the direction of rotation. With all this, there is a feeling that the hands are repelled from something, with all this accelerating even more.

To illustrate how the Coriolis force works, it is also possible to give an example with a person who moves to the center of a rotating carousel, holding onto the handrail. In this case, it will be “demolished sideways” in the opposite direction of rotation.

The Relationship Between the Coriolis Force and the Weather

The effect is responsible for the rotation of large cyclones. This determines the direction of rotation of the vortexes of cyclones, which we observe in the images obtained from meteorological satellites. In the Northern Hemisphere, the rotation of air masses occurs in cyclones counterclockwise, and in anticyclones – clockwise; in the South – on the contrary: clockwise in cyclones and against – in anticyclones. The deviation of the winds during atmospheric circulation is also a manifestation of the Coriolis force.

The Coriolis force must be considered when considering planetary movements of water in the ocean. It is the cause of gyroscopic waves.
